The Ballymena, Harryville and District Darts on Friday night saw the return of the 5 a sides competition after several years absence and it did not disappoint.
Round one results: Fountain Bar 1 - bye; Drifters 1 defeated Buffs Club; BT/PO 2 - bye; Fountain Arrows defeated by Drifters 2; Wanderers - bye; The Diamond 2 defeated Cosy Corner; Slemish Tavern defeated Fountain Bar 2; BT/PO 1 defeated by The Diamond 1.
Five teams therefore entered the Duffers contest, 1 prelim match was played with BT/PO 1 defeating Fountain Bar 2 (5-1). This left 4 teams and Buffs Club defeated by Fountain Arrows (5-1) while Cosy Corner fall short in losing to Fountain Arrows (5-0). The final almost went the distance, BT/PO claiming the title from Fountain Arrows (5-3)
Match 1 saw Drifters 1 race to a 4-0 lead before Fountain Bar 1 had a mini revival claiming the next 3 legs, however Drifters claimed Game 8 to progress to the semis.
The next game was more clear cut, Drifters 2 showing their class in defeating BT/PO 2 5-0. Wanderers claimed the opening game through Willy Bones before The Diamond 2 hit their groove and rattled off the next 5 legs to progress. The Diamond 1 claimed a similarly emphatic victory as their team mates by overcoming Slemish Tavern 5-1.
The all Drifters semi look a close matched affair, scores at one stage being 2-2 before the experience of Drifters 2 showed through and they won 5-2. The all-Diamond contest was similarly close with Diamond 2 unable to hit important doubles in their 5-2 defeat to The Diamond 1.
The final was one-sided as Drifters 2 raced to a 4-0 lead thanks to wins from Geoff Matthews, Andy Martin, David McFall and John Elder before Davy Martin pulled 1 back for The Diamond. However, it was never going to be enough as Geoff Matthews won the decisive leg to claim a 5-1 victory.
