The Saturday competition at Ballymena Golf Club was for the Gardner Cup, in memory of Lyle Gardner, a past secretary of the club.
This year’s victory was John McElroy who went through the front nine in three over par, having scored six pars, for a total of 20 points.
The 11-handicapper’s back nine accounted for four pars, four bogeys plus a birdie on the 13th for an additional 21 points and an overall total of 41.
Second place was taken by another 11-handicapper, John Lorimer, with 39 points. John set off like a house on fire and his first nine amounted to seven pars, a double bogey on the fifth plus a birdie at the seventh to be one over after nine, with 22 points on his card.
The second nine commenced par, bogey, par but he then scored six straight bogeys to complete the nine holes with 17 points.
Third prize was won by Jay Smyth (17) with 38 points which came from equal nines of 19 points.
The first nine holes provided four pars, three bogeys plus double bogeys at the sixth and ninth. The second nine was made up three pars, bogeys at the 12th and 13th, two double bogeys while he birdied the 10th and had a non-event at the 15th.
Fourth prize went to Gerald McCann (17) with the best of three scores of 37 points.
Seventeen of those were scored on the outward nine holes, which contained a ‘ding’ on the par five third.
The inward nine showed a marked improvement when he scored 20 points, despite again failing to score on one hole, the 12th, but he eventually prevailed over the final three holes from Felix McQuillan.
The nine-handicapper claimed fifth prize by virtue of a better last six hole tally from James Hanna.
The highlight of Felix’s round was an eagle two on the par four 13th en route to 20 points to add to his 17 from the front nine.
Hanna (13) had birdies at 13 and 16 but he will rue non-scores at the third and last holes.
The best gross card was submitted by Gary Black (1) who played the course in three over par.
