There was plenty of mud, sweat and cheers as runners brought in the new year at the annual Race Over the Glens promotion.
Almost 400 runners tackled the soggy conditions at Glenariff Forest Park for the traditional curtain-raiser to the athletics year, hosted by Ballymena Runners.
Thankfully, the heavy showers of earlier in the morning eased off just as the athletes made their way to the start line which pleased the spectators, who had gathered in large numbers.
The men’s race was won by local runner Mark McKinstry, wearing the colours of North Belfast Harriers, in an excellent time of 35:13, followed by Brian Campbell (Willowfield Harriers) some 10 seconds behind.
In the ladies’ race, Ballymena Runners’ Sharon Leetch made all the early running but she was passed near the final descent by international mountain runner Shileen O’Kane who went on to win in a time of 45:00.
Sharon finished second in 45:19 with her Ballymena Runners team-mate Paula Arthur-McCarthy claiming a very creditable third position with a time of 46:13.
