New season at Nuttscorner Oval

A NEW decade of short oval racing kicks off at Nuttscorner Oval on Easter Monday when a bumper fifteen race, five formula spectacular, sponsored by Bryan Hynds Services of Portadown, gets the 2010 season off to an exciting start.

Topping the bill is a World Championship qualifying round for the fastest cars on the tracks, the National Hot Rods.

At the half way stage of their campaign to make the grid at July’s World Final in Ipswich, Portadown’s Gary Woolsey currently tops the points chart. Fellow Co Armagh man Mark Heatrick is hard on his heels in second, ahead of current Northern Ireland Champion Stewart Doak.

Irish Open Champion Keith Martin (Dungannon) and crowd favourite John Christie (Crumlin) will be others hoping to take the honours, whilst Randalstown teenager Corrie Beggs will make his debut in a stunning Peugeot 206cc.

The 2 Litre Hot Rods and Lightning Rods will also have valuable World Final qualifying points on offer, and both are sure to take to the tarmac in large numbers.

In the 2 Litres, Portadown’s World Champion Wayne Woolsey and Randalstown-based Irish Champion Shane Murray both have immaculately refurbished machines for the new campaign, and will be battling for the honours, but don’t discount Gary Campbell (Kells), Davy Clarke (Dungannon) or European Champion Andy Best (Richhill).

In the Lightning Rods, World Champ Stephen Emerson (Antrim) will be the focus of most of the attention, as he returns to the raceway after a period of suspension.

His enforced holiday means he is some way behind in the points chart, but that should prove a massive incentive to Stephen and his performances will be well worth watching, as he aims to cut the deficit. Irish and National Champion David Hearst (Tandragee) will be a real challenger too, alongside brothers Gordon and Ben McKee of Templepatrick.

Other action on the day comes from the youngsters in the Junior Productions and the all-action ProStocks, where thrills and spills are never in short supply.

The first green flag of the day drops at 2pm. For more details visit our website at www.nuttscorneroval.com
