Sean has tools for success at Galgorm Castle

THE July Monthly Medal sponsored by Bosch Tools was played at Galgorm Castle Golf Club.

The outright winner Sean McCormick (5) was out in three under par and completed the back nine in one under to finish with four under par for the round.

McCormick got off to a poor start when he bogeyed the first but got back on track with a birdie at the second and from there on he was on fire.

McCormick led Colin Gray (15), Trevor Fleming (8) and Billy Cull (6) by one shot at the turn followed by Stephen McAuley (4) two shots away with Peter Daly (8) another two shots behind.

Through 13, McCormick had increased his lead to two shots over Gray with Cull another two shots behind. Fleming and McAuley were a further shot down and Daly two further shots down.

With two holes to play, 15-handicapper Gray who was making a big effort for victory had improved to within one shot of the leader McCormick. Gray was now four shots clear of Cull and Fleming.

McAuley was another shot away and Daly two more shots behind.

McCormick finished bogey (his only one on the back nine), par for a one shot victory from Gray (two bogeys) who took the runner-up place.

Fleming (two pars) and Cull (two pars) finished together but with a better back six Fleming won Division 1 with Cull second. Daly with a

late birdie, par finish drew level with McAuley (two pars) and with a better back six claimed third place.

Gary Hood (17) was clear by three shots in Division 2 at halfway followed by Garry Duffin (13) who was one shot ahead of Aaron Steele (16) and Alistair Murray (13).

Through 13, Hood still held his three shot advantage over Duffin who was two and three shots ahead of Murray and Steele respectively. After the Grove Hood was two points ahead of Duffin who was joined by Murray with Steele also closing.

An exciting finish saw the four golfers finishing together. Hood (double bogey, bogey) faded over the finishing holes allowing the other three to catch up with him – G Duffin (bogey, birdie), Murray (two pars) and Steele (two pars).

Steele pipped the rest at the finish with a better back nine. Murray with a better back nine finished second with Duffin (better back nine) third.

In Division 3 after the front nine Andrew McKillop (22) was way out in front with a five shot advantage over Ian Rosborough (19) with Jonathan Larmour (20) another shot behind.

With three to play McKillop held a six shot lead over Rosborough and an improving Larmour. McKillop then ran into bogey trouble to finish with three triple bogeys. Rosborough took advantage of the opportunity and came home par, bogey, par to win by two shots. Larmour finished double

bogey, bogey, par to draw level with McKillop and with a better back nine took second place.

Philip Graham won the gross prize, while Leonard Craig won the Seniors competition.

QUINN CONTRACTS STABLEFORD

Peter Kennoway came home the victor by four points in the Quinn Contracts sponsored Stableford held at Galgorm Castle Golf Club.

At the halfway stage Stephen McAuley (4) and Club Captain Lyle Foster (7) held a two point advantage over Peter Kennoway (12), Adam Steele (13), Gary Boyd (11) and Michael Brown (7). Simon Lennox (11) was a further two points behind.

Through 13 saw a change in leadership with Kennoway and Boyd ahead of Foster by one point.

Steele and McAuley were a point behind Foster followed by Brown and Lennox at two point intervals respectively further away.

Approaching the Lowlands Kennoway had opened up a two point advantage from Foster and Steele. Boyd had fallen back after a ‘ding’ at the Devils Elbow and was another point behind. McAuley was down by another point and one point ahead of Lennox and Brown.

Kennoway finished with a par and a birdie to win by four points from Steele (bogey, par). Foster who was leading by three points with one to play in Division 1 ‘dinged’ the last enabling McAuley with a par, birdie finish to draw level and with a better back three, McAuley took first place with Foster second.

There was a close finish for the remaining place as Boyd (double bogey, bogey), Lennox (par, bogey) and Brown (par, bogey) all finished level and with a better back nine Lennox claimed the third spot.

In Division 2 at the turn David Kilpatrick (16) and Robert Topping (17) held a slender one point lead from Malcolm McIlroy (14) who was one point ahead of Ivan Alexander (17), Raymond Ardis (13) and Tony Cheuk (17).

Kilpatrick, Topping and McIlroy continued to vie for the lead up to 14 where McIlroy led Kilpatrick and Topping by one point. Ardis was another point behind with Alexander and Cheuk a further point down.

With one to play Cheuk had progressed and joined McIlroy at the front by one point from Ardis, Kilpatrick and Topping. Alexander was a point adrift.

Cheuk (double bogey), McIlroy (bogey), Ardis (par), Kilpatrick (bogey) and Topping (bogey) all finished together but were unable to hold off Alexander with a birdie to lead for the first time on the post. Ardis with a better back three finished second with Cheuk (better back nine) in third.

Shane Duffin (19) was two points clear of Raymond Steele (20) in Division 3 at the start of the back nine. Martin Laverty (24) was two more points behind followed by Norman Nicholl (26) another point away.

Through 13, Laverty had moved up to join Duffin in the lead, two points ahead of Steele with Nicholl three further points behind.

Approaching 17, Duffin was leading by one point with Laverty and Steele joint second. Nicholl was another point down.

Duffin lost his chance of winning when he ‘dinged ‘ the last. Steele with a double bogey, bogey finish joined Duffin and with a better back nine Steele finished in third place. A point ahead Nicholl (two bogeys) and Laverty (double bogey, bogey) finished together and with a better back nine Nicholl took first place with Laverty second.

Adrain Burns (Scr) won the Gross and the Seniors by Fergus McKelvey (18)

Twos were recorded by: M Brown, P Graham, J Taylor (x2), C steele, S Logan, P Kennoway, J Millar, J Douglas, M Sharpe, C Atchison, R Graham, M Laverty, I Stewart and N Cairns.
