Steede aims for fourth Twin Peaks success

FRESH from his record breaking three-in-a-row victories, event specialist Jonny Steede hopes to defend his title and notch up a remarkable four on the bounce when he defends his Glenravel Festival Twin Peaks title next Monday.

Steede was the first man to lift the treble and his Ballymena Runners Club has lifted the trophny 10 times in the event’s 14 year history.

Now the hottest of favourites, Steede should still face stiff opposition from his colleague and another event specialist Alec Brennan - himself a double winner.

Also in with a chance is another former winner Jonathan McCloy whilst Larne’s Mark McManus cannot be discounted.

Former Glens Runner Emmet McAlister, now wearing Ballymena’s black vest, finished third and fourth in the last two years and could upset the applecart.

Local hopes rest with Declan McBride, former youth international Conor Reid and a clutch of up and coming prospects, the best of which are David Higgins, Josh McKeown, Paul Donnelly and Conor McNeill.

Last year Susan O’Boyle was the best of the local ladies but hopes are high that young Suzannah Brown can maybe even carry off the top ladies’ prize.

The veteran trophies went to Brian McAuley and Mary Scanlon while the ageless Brigid Quinn again was in the prizes.

The 5k event is a mixture of cross country and road running and takes in the climb of two hills above Cargan village, halfway between Ballymena and Cushendall.

Sponsored by Glenravel Credit Union, the Twin Peaks starts from the Greenhills Bar at 7.30 pm on Monday 22nd August with registration in the adjoining school from 6.30 pm.

Categories (male and female in all categories) are: Open; Local; Veterans 40+; Under18; and Under15
