Surgenor wins Walter Young prize at Raceview

THE Mazda competition at Ballymena Golf Club, sponsored by Walter Young, Broughshane, was won by Stephen Surgenor, with a nett score of 62, and only on a better second nine hole score from Brian Russell.

Thirteen-handicapper Surgenor hadn’t the best start to his round as he dropped a shot on the first hole and two more on the second.

A birdie on the third got him back on track and he played the rest of the opening nine in one over gross, taking him out in three over.

He then played the first seven holes on the back nine in two over, having shed a shot on the 12th and 14th and the final two holes accounted for a further dropped shot on both.

Russell (16) was through the opening nine in four over which included a double bogey on the fifth and a steady second nine in testing conditions resulted in six single bogeys plus pars on 13, 17 and 18 which was good enough to be three shots ahead of the next five nett returns, all 65s.

William Tuff (9) had the best of those, having covered the second nine in three over gross. Tuff was level par after six holes but, alas, he ran up a double bogey on the short par three seventh and shed a shot on the ninth to be three over.

He then commenced the inward nine with three bogeys but he then played the final six holes in straight pars.

Fourth nett was William AH Montgomery (10) who was three over after nine, having double-bogeyed the eighth and he also had a double bogey on the 16th but he registered six pars and had a better last three holes score from Raymond Scullion (13).

Raymond was one over after six and then proceeded to drop a shot on each of the next three holes.

His back nine was made up of six fours plus a trio of fives, of which two came on the last two holes, yet still managed to squeeze out Michael Shannon (20) and James Eagleson over the second nine.

Shannon had a good outward nine, being only seven over but an eight on the 12th was a major setback, having played the other eight holes with six bogeys plus pars on the 11th and 13th.

Eagleson (14) had a sound opening nine of four over with a double bogey on the fourth, while the closing nine was made up of five bogeys, three pars plus another double bogey on the 15th.

The best gross came from Philip Moore (3) who had a 72. Having been three over on the front nine, he played the back nine in one over, dropping a shot on the 17th.
