Despite being under pressure in the early stages of the first half, Utd’s young defence held firm, and they created the best chance of the game after 30 minutes, but Jordon Foster was unable to convert Matthew Ferguson’s deep cross.

United had more possession in the second half, but neither side could make a breakthrough with both goalkeepers, Ross Glenndinning of Linfield and Macauley Cairns in United’s goal, proving unbeatable.

United’s defence, marshalled well by Kyle Crawford, stood strong and reduced Linfield to relying on long distance shots.

The game finished all square - a great result for a young United side.

Team: Cairns, Harris, Gardiner, McVey, Crawford, Ferguson, Kane, McCaul, Surgenor, Carson, Foster

Subs: Graham, Black, Hamill, Kearney, Shevlin. “This was a very tough game, considering the strength of Linfield’s team, but we performed superbly to a man. Special mention must be given to first team players, Brian McCaul and Mark Surgenor who lead by example and of course, our goalkeeper, Macauley Cairns who was flawless,” said David Dorrian.
