Wind slows riders in Gardiner Cup

THERE was a big turnout of 31 riders at Woodgreen last Wednesday evening for the Ballymena Road Club – Scott Roof Tiles – Gardiner cup 10 miles time trial.

The club's event also included entrants in the Ulster Women's Association time trial league and several other male visitors who were all hoping for a fast night on the A26 course.

However the tough windy conditions slowed everyone's times considerably and no records were broken this time out.

Steven Workman continued to dominate the club result and he was fastest with 22 minutes 59 seconds with junior rider Matthew Brennan second with 23.35.

Third place went to Andrew Moss with an excellent time of 23.51. Andrew hasn't raced since about 1993, when he won the club's time trial best all rounder championship with 27.068 mph average speed. It is great to see Andrew out again, let's hope he doesn't wait 17 years before his next outing.

Derek Dougan was fourth fastest with 23.56 while Christopher Beattie recorded 24.05 for fifth place, a time which won the handicap section and with it the Gardiner cup.

The fastest visitor was John Heverin (Clann Eireann) with 21 minutes 24 seconds.
