Winter League lives up to its name at Galgorm Castle

The Winter League and Sweep sponsored by McAllisters Butchers, Broughshane continued at Galgorm Castle Golf Club. Heavy overhead clouds and the odd drizzle did not deter the participating golfers.

A trio of golfers were vying for the lead in Division 1 after the fourth hole. George Watt (5), Billy Cull (3) and Daniel Reilly (1) were level, a point ahead of Mark Hamilton (3). A par, birdie, par over the next three holes saw Watt open up a two point gap over Cull, Reilly and an improved Hamilton. This trio of players closed the gap on Watt over the closing holes but were unable to catch up. Watt finished par, bogey to win by one point. Cull (two pars), Reilly (birdie, par) and Hamilton (bogey, birdie) finished together and with a better last six Hami8lton took second place. Cull finished in third place and Reilly won the Gross.

Only one point separated Alan Knox (8), Aidan Donnelly (8), Michael Burton (7) and Michael Adams (7) in Division 2 through The Niuc with Knox and Burton the leading pair. Knox and Burton continued to lead through seven from Donnelly who was one point behind. Adams was another point down after a double bogey at Broadmeadows. Knox eased ahead over the closing two holes with two pars to win by one point from Burton (par, bogey) and Donnelly (two pars) and with a better last one Donnelly finished second with Burton third. Adams with two pars was another point behind. Division 3 opened briskly with eleven pars and three birdies being scored over the opening four holes with Jamie Surgeoner (8) and Brian Heggarty (8) one point ahead of Richard Lennox (9) and Damian Gillan (9). Lennox upped his game with three pars to take a two point lead over Surgeoner and Heggarty with Gillan another two points in arrears. However a close ending ensued and only one point separated the four players at the finish. Richard Lennox who had held a two point advantage with two to play hit bogey trouble and finished double bogey, bogey. This alloowed Surgeoner with a par and a bogey to draw level and with a better last three Surgeoner took first place with Richard Lennox in second place. One point behind Heggarty (double bogey, par) and a belated effort by Gillan with two pars finished together and with a better last six third place went to Gillan.

Back nine: Jackson Minford (8) and Step0hen Logan (3) were leading Geoffrey Marshall (8) and Jonathan McCart (6) by two points through fourteen. A par, birdie brought Marshall to within one point of Minford (two pars) with two to play. Logan (birdie, par) also moved to within one point of the leader. McCart with a par and a bogey found himself two further points behind. Minford finished with two bogeys and was joined by a late rally from Logan (two pars) but with a better back six Minford withstood the pressure to take first place. Marshall finished in third place two points behind and a point ahead of McCart (bogey, par).
