Workman wins Road Club’s Stan Finlay memorial event

Steven Workman was fastest of the 21 Ballymena Road Club – Chain Reaction Cycles – riders in last Wednesday evening’s Stan Finlay memorial 10 miles time trial at Woodgreen.

The event, which forms part of the Northstone sponsored club race series, also attracted thirteen visitors to the ultra fast A26 Lisnevenagh road course.

Workman recorded 21 minutes 32 seconds for a comfortable winning margin over second placed Connor Young who clocked 22.07 while Ryan Shaw finished third with 22.30.

Eileen Burns was fastest in the ladies section with 24 minutes 14 seconds – a time which good enough for nineth place in the club result. Martin Ruddy won the handicap section with 21.09 while John Madden (Dig Deep) was fastest visitor with 20 minutes 25 seconds.

H&M WILSON CUP ROAD RACE

This week’s club race is the H&M Wilson cup road race at Slaght tonight Wednesday 28th May at 7pm.

This is a handicapped event with the entrants going off in three or possibly four groups depending on the turnout.

The race will start at Slaght corner and then complete three laps of the Caddy circuit.

The chief marshall is Richard Wilson and he will be assisted by Pius McKernan, Patsy McGurk, Paul McWilliams, Jackie Knowles, Graham Bonner and Bobby Currie.

RACE TEAM IN DONEGAL

Ballymena Road Club’s racing team are off to Donegal this weekend for the eagerly awaited Ras Dhun na nGall three-day stage race which will take place in Ardara, Co. Donegal on Friday 30th May, Saturday 31st May and Sunday 1st June.

The racing is guaranteed to be hard and fast on the physically very challenging Donegal roads and there will also be an abundance of spectacular scenery.

One of the BRC team members is Hall Booth who said: “The race comprises, four stages; a 32 mile Friday evening stage; 2.5 mile hilly TT on Saturday morning followed by a 50 mile road stage in the afternoon.

“Sunday is a 60 mile road stage finishing on Glengesh. All stages are, in keeping with the Donegal terrain, very hilly.”

The BRC team is Matthew Brennan, Clifford Grant, Simon Taggart, Ryan Shaw, Hall Booth and David Dougan. The team manager is Andy Wills and mechanic Derek Dougan.

Racing committee member Nigel Kernohan has invited all club members to a meeting at Rex Bonar House on Monday 2nd June at 19:30 to plan for the Billy Kerr Sportive.

The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday 16th August and will feature:

A choice of three different routes along the magnificent north east Antrim coast designed to cater for all levels of cyclist.

Sponsorship is from Chain Reaction Cycles who will be supplying excellent goodie bags.

Celebrity guest Sean Kelly will be making an appearance at the event.

Food and refreshments will be provided along the route and start / finish location.

The nominated charity partner is Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice

The purpose of the meeting is to brief members on the sportive’s progress to date and to obtain volunteers for various tasks.
