Your chance to win new motorcycling DVD

IT’S the new ‘must-have’ motorcycling DVD - and one lucky reader can win a copy courtesy of the Ballymena/Antrim Times.

Waldovision, the people who brought us such films as Joey Dunlop-No Ordinary Joe, Raining Champions, How the North West Was Won and Stanley Wood-Forgotten Hero, have done it again.

Set for release on December 3, their latest offering is called Joey, Ray and Rivals (and a little bit of road racing history)Its a fantastic trip back in time with many never before seen photos and film footage from Irish road race meetings.

I’ve been lucky enough to have seen a rough cut a few weeks ago and by the time you read this I will have seen the final version, as I am going today (Tuesday) to see the first showing of it. I can tell you already that some of the footage of racing from the Carrowdore 100, Ulster Grand Prix, Temple 100, North West and Cookstown has never been aired before and is little less than awe inspiring.

Alwyn James tells how, many years ago, he was able to achieve amazing on board film of racing, and indeed, he and his brother Colins work then, set the standard for all the onboard camera work now. In those days the camera was a full size article, not the matchbox sized items that are used now.

The film is voiced by the BBC’s Stephen Watson and features interviews with the Dromara Destroyers, Ray McCullough, Brian Reid, Trevor Steel and Ian McGregor. The Armoy perspective is provided by Joey’s brother Jim, Frank Kennedy’s brother Bill, now Clerk of the Course at the Armoy road race meeting, Mervyn Robinson’s son Paul and the O’Kane brothers Hugh and Jim, who were long time sponsors of Mervyn.

There are also contributions from William Dunlop, John McGuinness, Guy Martin and Conor Cummins as well as a man I have tagged a living legend, Denis Gallagher, whose racing career has spanned over half a century, and still continues to this day.

There is a unique interview with Ray McCullough. Filmed in 1979, in it he says that it’s a matter of time till Joey wins his first race at the North West!

The new DVD features many never before published photos from the 60s and 70s from men like Derek McIntyre, Paul McClean and myself. From my own standpoint, there are some of my photos that I had never seen myself, as I didn’t print them at the time.

Speaking to Colin James, from Waldovision he said: “I am delighted that so many of our top photographers have provided new material to illustrate this programme so the fans will see many unique photographs that have been buried in albums since they were first taken.”

Anna Masefield, who is the Editor and Director of the new DVD said: “This is a story about the friendly rivalry between two very talented teams of riders who gave the sport some very memorable moments in the history of motorcycle racing.”

Waldovision and Duke Marketing have confirmed that a donation from the sale of each copy will go towards funding a garden to honour the Dromara men in the Co. Down village. Ahead of its release, the very first showing, the World premiere, will take place in Dromore Rugby Club, on Barban Hill this Thursday night at 8.30pm.
