He gave up his position there to concentrate on painting on a full-time basis. Since giving up teaching he has been part of several group exhibitions and his work can be found in many private collections throughout the whole of Ireland, or as far away as Canada and the United States. Hugh was runner up in The Bass Irish Art awards in 2002 and has had exhibitions in Belfast, Lurgan, Coleraine and Ballymoney.

Hugh is comfortable working in either oils or water colours and he specialises in Acrylic. Living close to the Giants Causeway at the northern tip of North Antrim coast, he is privy to some of the worlds most beautiful and awe inspiring landscape.

Hugh explains: "The majestic cliffs, inaccessible bays and isolated ruins all edged by Kelp walls, Harbours, slipways and Fisherman's cottages is overwhelming. Every day is a fresh challenge to say something interesting in paint about this fantastic kingdom, its weather, moods, people and its very special magic".

Leah Tweed, Ballymoney Branch Library Manager, explains: “You are invited to come along on Monday 25th January at 7pm to meet one of Ireland’s most respected and experienced landscape artists, Hugh McIlfatrick. Admission is free but booking is advisable.”
