£0.6m marinas income for Mid and East Antrim

Mid and East Antrim’s harbours and marinas generated an income of almost £0.6m during the last financial year.

Of this, £419,355 was income from Carrickfergus Marina, according to a report to the borough council’s Direct Services Committee.

Three hundred berths at Carrick Marina generated almost £300,000 among contract berth-holders and just over £15,000 from visitors.

The second highest earner was Glenarm, £61,523; Portglenone, £10,690 and Carnlough, £6,059 with the council reporting a “good year for visiting boat income” in  2019/20.

However, the borough council anticipates that visitor income will be halved this financial year as a result of the Covid pandemic.

There are 40 berths at Glenarm Marina, 30 at Carnlough Harbour and 30, Portglenone Marina. The council also manages and maintains 12 slipways with expenditure costs overall of £82,500.

New pontoons are expected to be in place at Glenarm Marina by Easter next year.

A disability hoist and pump out equipment are also being installed and a disability berth is to be provided.

Committee members have also been told that remedial work at Portmuck Harbour in Islandmagee where there has been some erosion of the base blocks at the front of the pier (read here) and Fisherman’s Quay in Carrickfergus (read here) is to commence by the end of the year.
