Local man pays respects to father

James was honouring the American Servicemen and women who served in Northern Ireland during World War II and their part in the Normandy landings.
James also paid tribute to his father William J Stewart of Los Angeles, who was stationed with the American Air Force at Toome, in 1943. During action he was awarded the Bronze Star for Heroic and Meritorious Achievement. The medal now has pride of place in Jamess home along with his fathers many awards presented to him when he was involved with NASA and the Apollo Space Programme. 
He was an important member of the Apollo 11 team and their successful moon landing on July 16. 1969, for which he received a personally signed certificate of thanks from Astronauts Edwin E (Buzz) Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins. Amongst other duties he was also a member of the team which successfully brought the damaged Apollo 13 Space capsule home.

For his personal involvement as a member of the space team he was presented with a personally autographed certificate of thanks from the astronauts with an actual portion of the seat fabric of the Apollo 13 Command Module.
