DUP councillor Michelle Knight-McQuillan will officially take up her post today, Wednesday, April 1.

Michelle was co-opted in to replace brother-in-law MLA Adrian McQuillan in Coleraine Borough Council back in December 2013. “It was a bit of a whirl-wind, but I just took things as they came and settled in well. I knew all the processes of Council, and I really enjoy it,” she recalled.

“I am really delighted,” said Michelle, just hours after she was given the prestigious role.

“It’ll be a new challenge, but it’s one I am looking forward to.”

Michelle, who is the only female member of the DUP on the new super council went on: “I am pleased that the first mayor is a woman.

“I feel that women are under represented in politics. My role will good for other women in the area, it may encourage others to step forward. Women are at the forefront of many of the local groups, they are the forefront of the community.”

Michelle, who works in a research capacity with MLA Adrian McQuillan, thanked her party and her family for their support. “I am glad that my party had the faith in me to put me forward for the role. I am the only women in the DUP on Causeway Coast and Glens, there are ten men in the party grouping and then me, it does feel a bit strange,” she joked. “I know that I have a busy year ahead, but it’s one I am looking forward to.”
