BeFit women climb their way to nearly £30k for Cancer Focus

a 30-STRONG team of women from Larne has raised the outstanding sum of £29,435.36 for Cancer Focus Northern Ireland – the new name of the Ulster Cancer Foundation - by climbing Ben Nevis.

The BeFit, BenHer Challengers would not have been able to raise this amazing amount if it wasn’t for the support of local businesses and the people of Larne for attending each of their fundraising events including Zumbathons, darts and pool competition, a 90’s night, Take Me Out night, Ulster Scots night and many more fundraising events.

Andrea Kernohan, owner of Larne-based fitness club BeFit, was the leader of the 30-strong BeFit all-women team who took part in the gruelling Ben Nevis ‘BenHer’ climb in Scotland on the weekend of June 22 - 24 June.

Andrea said: “For a long time now I have wanted to give something back to Cancer Focus, as my mother-in-law passed away from cancer several years ago.

“I also like to set the BeFit girls a challenge every so often, so that they have a fitness gold to work towards. I thought the Cancer Focus BenHer – Ben Nevis challenge was perfect!

“Sadly this cause is close the girls’ hearts as so many people have been affected by cancer in one way or another.”

Rosie Hassin, community fundraising officer for Cancer Focus, said: “This fantastic amount of money raised for Cancer Focus will be spent locally, continuing to support people affected by cancer in Northern Ireland.

“Cancer Focus is committed to tackling cancer by supporting research, providing care services for cancer patients and their families and educating people on how they can reduce their risk of cancer.”

Breast cancer is now the most common form of cancer in women in Northern Ireland with more than 1,200 women diagnosed with the disease each year, but survival rates are steadily improving. Today, there are around 11,000 women with a diagnosis of breast cancer living in Northern Ireland.
