Now, a former councillor, and Deputy Mayor, Yvonne Boyle has told The Times that she has written to the Northern Ireland Environment Agency to find out if they can help restore the fountain.

She told The Times: “When I was a councillor on Coleraine Council I asked for the fountain, which I believe dates back to 1870, to be included in the Waterside Renovation Scheme in 2013, but unfortunately it was not included at that time.

“I have this week written to NIEA to see if they would restore it.

“I am delighted that a public campaign has been started and I will do all that I can to help.”
