Brought to court over £9.32 theft

A Lurgan man claimed he was so confused through drink he put steaks in the wrong bag before leaving Tesco without paying for them.

Colin Richard Strain (48), Donard Gardens, Lurgan, admitted the theft of two steaks, valued at £9.32, on August 19 last year.

Craigavon Magistrates Court heard last Wednesday that Strain left the store without paying for the steaks.

When he was interviewed he said he was so confused due to taking alcohol he put the steaks in the wrong bag.

He had the money to pay for them and offered to pay.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, adjourned the case so that a short sentence report could be obtained.

He asked Gates if he would consent to probation or community service and the defendant said he would.

Gates had been convicted of the offence in his absence and a warrant had been issued for his arrest to bring him to court.

He was released on his own bail of £250.
