Care Council role extended

A Greenisland woman’s current membership of the Northern Ireland Social Care Council has been extended for a further period.

Marie McMahon, a non-executive registrant member of the body which is responsible for registering and regulating social care staff, is one of three extensions until September 2015 announced by Health Minister Jim Wells.

Mrs McMahon, who holds an advanced award in social work management, retired in 2006 from her post as assistant chief inspector of social services with the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety.

Since then she has worked part-time as a self-employed consultant and as the independent social work advisor to the Northern Ireland Complaint’s Ombudsman.

Mrs McMahon is also a volunteer on an ecological garden project at a local nursery and primary school.

She brings to her role as Social Care Council member extensive experience gained from over 49 years in social work as a practitioner, trainer, manager and inspector.

Mrs McMahon holds no other public appointments.

The non-executive members of the Social Care Council attract an annual remuneration of £6,367. The body is also the Northern Ireland component of the UK sector skills council partnership Skills for Care and Development which has the responsibility of ensuring that an appropriately skilled and qualified workforce is available.
