Police said a woman and a man believed to be wielding a screwdriver ordered three men out of a Renault Clio that was parked at the Vale Centre shortly after 10pm on Friday night (May 9).

A PSNI spokesperson outlined how the events are thought to have unfolded: “The driver and two passengers were then approached by a dark coloured VW Golf and it is believed that a female passenger of the Golf got out of the car.

“The driver of the Golf also got out of the car and is believed to have been armed with a suspected screwdriver. The driver of the Clio and two other male passengers were demanded to exit the car while the female, the driver of the Golf and another man got into the Clio and headed towards the Culmore Road area.

“All three males were left badly shaken and it is believed that their mobile phones were left in the car during the incident.”

The following morning, the PSNI confirmed that the car had been recovered, but that it had been burnt out. A spokesperson said: “Police investigating the vehicle hijacking at the Vale Centre, Greysteel area last night (Friday, May 9) have recovered the blue Renault Clio that was taken during the incident.

“Shortly before 6am this morning (Saturday, May 10), it was reported that the vehicle was found burnt out in a carpark at the Alder Road, Foyle area. No one is believed to have been inside the vehicle at the time of the incident.”
