Cookstown woman on ‘mystery tour’ of Derry assaulted police

Amy Reid, of Coolnafranky Park, Cookstown, received a conditional discharge for two years after admitted criminal damage and assault on police.

The charges relate to an incident outside the Ice Wharf on November 16, last year.

The 23-year-old was also ordered to pay £175 compensation to Wetherspoons for the damage caused and to pay £100 to the police officer she assaulted.

Derry Magistrates Court heard Reid was part of a group who were refused any more alcohol by staff in the Ice Wharf. She kicked the glass panel of of the front door causing it to break.

She also assaulted a police officer who intervened.

During police interview, Reid said she had been part of a ‘mystery tour’ to the city and was drunk.

She said she couldn’t remember the incident but accepted she was the person captured on CCTV committing the offences.

Defence counsel Dean Mooney told the court his client was ‘hopelessly drunk’ on the night in question. He said she had no intention to break the glass.

Passing sentence, District Judge Barney McElholm said Reid ‘possibly misunderstood the meaning of mystery tour’.
