Forced police car to take evasive action on M1

When he drove from the onslip at a motorway junction into the outside lane a 33-year-old man forced a police car to take action in order to avoid a collision.

Jamie Mackle, Drumcree Road, Portadown, was banned for 12 months last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for dangerous driving on April 14 this year. He was also fined £200.

The court heard that at 8am Mackle drove from the onslip into lane two of the M1 and a police vehicle had to take evasive action to avoid a collision.

The defendant made an apologetic admission to the offence.

A solicitor representing the defendant said he had been driving for seven years and had no record or penalty points. He explained that Mackle was going to Belfast and was going onto the motorway at the Lurgan junction.

The solicitor added his client went into the outside lane. He had checked but didn’t see a vehicle coming up in his blind spot.

Imposing the fine and ban District Judge, Mrs Bernie Kelly, told Mackle he would remain disqualified until he sat and passed the appropriate driving test.
