Dr Peter Virapen who practised out of Dervock for many years died suddenly at his home in Ballymoney yesterday (Thursday).

The father of four had been one of the most popular members of the medical profession and was from the old school of doctors who for years didn’t operate the appointment system; instead allowing patients to occupy his waiting room and then calling them in with the familiar shout of ‘Next’.

He was often characterised by his sometimes robust approach but there was no doubting his sincerity, care and deep knowledge of medicine. He retired some years ago with the best wishes of his many patients.

‘Dr V’ as he was often called will be fondly remembered with many genuinely sorry that he is no longer with us.

The funeral is due to take place on Monday with the service held in the Funeral home of James McMullan and Son with interment in Ballymoney Cemetery.

Dr. Virapen is survived by his wife Daphe and children, Laura, Karen, David and Paul.
