Diabetes’huge cost

DIABETES is on the rise and costing the health service in Northern Ireland more than £1m per day, a conference attended by leading academics, healthcare practitioners and pharmaceutical industry figures from both sides of the Atlantic heard in Londonderry last week.

Hosted by the University of Ulster, in association with C-TRIC (Clinical Translational Research and Innovation Centre), the 3rd annual Translational Medicine Conference focused on the theme of ‘Tackling the Burden of Chronic Illness associated with Diabetes and Mental Health.’

Two leading US innovators addressed the conference, Dr Susan Whoriskey, former Entrepreneur-In-Residence at the internationally renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology Entrepreneurship Center, and Trung Do, Executive Director of Business Development at Boston based Partners HealthCare,

Trung Do said: “The Translational Medicine Conference will be an excellent opportunity for us to get together and develop projects, many of which could benefit from the expertise and facilities on offer at C-TRIC.”

Dr Whoriskey said: “I was very impressed on my visit to C-TRIC and Northern Ireland is lucky to have such a Centre. I have never seen such an excellent convergence of facilities, expertise and partnership under one roof as is present in C-TRIC.”

C-TRIC’s business development manager, Barry Henderson said: “C-TRIC is helping to nurture new business ideas by providing rental workspace, top range laboratory facilities and world-class facilities for R&D in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and healthcare sectors.”
