Digney Welcomes Progress On Glenravel Bus Shelter

BALLYMENA SF Councillor Monica Digney has welcomed the decision taken by the Planning Office to streamline an application for a bus shelter at the junction of Glenravel and Craigdunloof Roads, Cargan.

Ms Digney said: "Following requests from local parents, Sinn Fin made representation to council for the provision of a bus shelter at what had been quite a dangerous junction.

"Representation was made on the back of recent improvements made by Roads Service to the layout of the junction including road markings, a hard standing and safety rail.

"A site meeting followed between local Sinn Fin representative, Paul Maguire, Roads Service and Council and following consultation with other relevant agencies, a planning application was brought forward which has now been streamlined.

Commenting on the news, Mr Maguire said: "In 2007, Sinn Fin gathered a petition of over 400 signatures calling for road improvements and speed calming measures to be implemented locally, in the wake of a fatal road traffic accident. Since then we have worked closely with Roads Service and other agencies, resulting in major road safety and speed calming engineering works.

"Sadly, a minority of drivers continue to drive through Glenravel without due care and at wholly inappropriate speeds and we have since had another fatality. Because of our accident history, the PSNI now deploy mobile safety cameras in both Cargan and Martinstown to enforce the speed limits by issuing fixed penalty notices.

"The decision by the Planning Service to streamline the bus shelter application at Craigdunloof Road, will be welcomed by the community as another step towards protecting road users. Many children will benefit from this shelter during the dark winter months ahead."
