Driver drove out in front of a police car

A 29-year-old who drove out in front of a police car was fined £135 last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for driving without due care and attention on June 20 last year.

Anthony Martin Smith, whose address was given to the court as Lisnagade Mews, Derrytrasna, was also ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy and banned for one year.

For failing to stop for police he was fined £100.

The court heard as police approached the junction of the Charles Street car park in Lurgan a vehicle pulled out causing them to stop.

An officer got out and signalled for the vehicle to stop but it continued from Charles Street into William Street.

Later when police spoke to Smith he denied careless driving and said he did not see an officer asking him to stop.

Mr Hugo Marley, representing the defendant, said Smith had been disqualified from driving for 18 months in December.

He added that he had lost his job because he could not drive but was a skilled mechanic and when he gets his licence back should be able to get employment.
