Beauty spot defaced by ugly ‘hazardous’ sunbeds

And the local council has made it a top priority to bring the culprit to justice.

Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council were tipped off last Friday that a number of large commercial sunbeds had been dumped at Cranny Bridge, Whitehall Road, Aghagallon.

Officers immediately went out to survey the scene before removing the sunbeds and dispose of them appropriately.

They are probing the incident to try and find out where the sunbeds came from and are appealing for salon owners who may have recently paid for the removal and disposal of sunbeds to get in touch with the details.

Officers will also be checking salons across the Borough to see if they have replaced sunbeds recently.

“This latest dumping of such hazardous waste is an absolutely despicable act and will not be tolerated,” said Lord Mayor, Councillor Darryn Causby. “Our officers have made this investigation a priority and are determined to catch the perpetrator. Obviously it took some time to dump these items and I would like to appeal to anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity around this area on Thursday, 29th May, or Friday, 30th May, to contact the Council.”

Sunbeds are classed as hazardous waste as the UV lighting tubes contain mercury. The acrylic plastic shields are highly flammable and not biodegradable.
