Workers removed dumped waste

MORE than 1.5 tonnes of illegally dumped household waste have been removed by Magherafelt Council workers from the recycling centre at Mullaghboy Road, Bellaghy, the local Council was told.

Furniture and several old household appliances were also removed from a footpath beside Bellaghy Primary School.

Council staff re-sited a litter bin at Main Street which had constantly been overturned by vandals. An additional bin was installed adjacent to a takeaway in the village.

Meanwhile, members heard that a quanity of lead acid car batteries was stolen from the recycling centre at Moyola Road, Castledawson.

Several old flat screen televisions were also taken from the lock up unit on site. Thieves smashed a padlock to gain access. Soaring scrap metal prices are contributing to the continuinig problem.
