Flute band parade praised

In a statement the PUP said the band were applauded around the town in what was described as ‘the biggest band parade Lurgan has ever seen’.

“The band also held a dignified wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial. A hymn was played as an officer of the band laid a wreath in remembrance of the fallen from both World Wars and subsequent conflicts. The band then made their way back to Johnston’s Row where all the visiting bands had assembled.

“The bands on parade were of the highest calibre and had travelled from all six counties of Northern Ireland. The spectators were spoiled as they watched and listened to some of the best bands the loyalist marching band scene has to offer and the judges had the unenviable task of awarding prizes to those judged best in various categories.

“The officers and members of the band must be commended on the hard work done in advance of this parade. The atmosphere created was one of a festival of music and culture, that could be enjoyed by all, young and old,” said PUP spokesperson Lexi Davidson.

“There will be those who will, as always, try to paint a negative picture when it comes to our marching bands. These negativities need addressed as they are seen by many in the loyalist communities as nothing more than a process of debritification which is currently underway in Northern Ireland.

“The organisers of this parade, through their hard work over the past year, have brought a massive array of talented bands to Lurgan, generated a family atmosphere, not seen in Lurgan for many years and brought much needed money into the local businesses. Well done Craigavon Protestant Boys.”
