To illustrate their point, local officers posted a picture of heavy fog which had rendered a runner at the side of the road invisible, despite the fact they were wearing a high visibility jacket.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Whilst on patrol this morning we passed two runners on the road as well as cyclists.

“They were all following the Highway Code and had yellow jackets etc on.

“Now don’t get me wrong I’m not telling people to stop exercising, however please be very, very careful out there.

“Please remove your headphones so that you can at least hear the oncoming vehicles.

“Visibility is reduced, cars will need to manoeuvre around you and they may struggle to see ahead into the oncoming lane putting everyone at risk.

People keep yourself safe out there! Conditions aren’t great.

Drivers be aware of other road users, reduce your speed and TURN ON YOUR LIGHTS,” they concluded.
