Following their formation in early 2013, the Group has expanded rapidly and now brings those living with lung disease together with doctors, nurses and other support workers on a regular basis.

By working closely with the Health and Social Care Trust, the Group has brought lung diseases up the agenda. Thanks to that, many local people have received improved care and treatment.

The Group has also successfully nominated Ballymena nurse Sharon Walker for an award for “outstanding contribution to healthcare in the community” for her work supporting patients.

Nessie Blair, Service Development Manager for the British Lung Foundation in Northern Ireland, said: “This goes to show the strength and commitment of Breathe Easy Ballymena.

“Sharon Walker has done so much to integrate her work as a nurse with the group and with the community. She has given countless hours to helping people cope with lung disease. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award.”

Linda Patton, General Manager of Medical Services for the Northern Trust, said:

“I’m delighted that Practice Nurse, Sharon Walker and the Specialist Respiratory Team staff involved in the Breathe Easy Groups have been recognised for their commitment and dedication to those living with lung conditions in the Northern Trust.

“It is only by working in partnership with advocate groups and those who have respiratory conditions that we can ensure that our care is patient-centred and that our services provide the type of care we would want for our families and ourselves,” said Linda.

Local MLA David McIlveen MLA said: “We have worked closely with BE Ballymena and Nessie Blair and these achievements are a testament to the hard work and dedication shown by all.”

Fellow Assemblyman Paul Frew MLA added: “The groups are a real inspiration to all of us and I know under the guidance of Nessie Blair and Sharon Walker they will only go from strength to strength.’
