Hunt on for Maze escaper

A 26-YEAR-OLD Lurgan man was one of 19 men being hunted by police after a mass break out from the Maze prison in September 1983.

Dermot Joseph McNally, from Lurgan Tarry, was one of 38 inmates who escaped from the prison in a spectacular breakout.

Many of the escapees were promptly recaptured by the security forces but McNally was one of those who were still at large.

Most of the escapees came from Belfast and Derry, McNally being the only one from Craigavon.

A prison officer died during the breakout when 38 inmates made their bid for freedom using a hijacked meals lorry.

After the breakout, Lurgan, like most parts of the province, saw the tightest security net since the troubles began, as the massive man-hunt got underway.

At times the town had virtually been surrounded by police, army and UDR checkpoints as the security forces attempted to track down escapees who may still be in the area.
