Information event for Whiteabbey residents

A SUCCESSFUL Information event held at Whiteabbey Community Centre has given residents in the area an opportunity to find out about local services and facilities and how they can become more involved in their community.

The event was organised by community representatives in conjunction with an inter-agency partnership established following Whiteabbey’s inclusion last year in the Department for Social Development’s Shared Neighbourhood Programme - which is funded by the International Fund for Ireland and delivered by the Housing Executive.

Commenting on the Information event, Chris Davis, the Housing Executive’s Community Cohesion Advisor in the North East Area, said: “Local community representatives were keen to organise an Information event to let residents in Whiteabbey know about the various groups and agencies working in this part of the borough and to encourage participation.

“There was a good turnout at both sessions held on Tuesday past, with visitors seeking information on issues such as education courses, activities for young people and older people, housing, policing and council matters.

“Local people will be key to taking forward the Shared Neighbourhood agenda and so community representatives greatly welcomed the interest shown in joining the Whiteabbey Shared Neighbourhood Committee.

“Following on from a community survey carried out last year, the statutory and voluntary sectors will be supporting the Whiteabbey community as it delivers projects that will develop Whiteabbey as a shared neighbourhood, where people of different backgrounds are welcome and can live, work, learn and play together.”

The Whiteabbey area was selected to participate in Phase 2 of the Shared Neighbourhood Programme in recognition of the good relations ongoing in the area and the commitment of the community to live together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding.
