Irish Street women get aninside look at capital of EU

Alderman Hilary McClintock, who accompanied the ladies from Lisnagelvin Woman’s Group on their trip to Brussels, said: “All of the ladies who attended really enjoyed the experience of learning more about the European Parliament and interacting with Diane about issues that affect us all.”

The Waterside Alderman said Mrs Dodds was very helpful and informative.

But she also paid tribute to her party colleague Niree McMorris who arranged the trip and tour.

“Diane was the perfect host who took time out of her very busy schedule to share her wealth of knowledge with us. I would like to pay tribute to Niree McMorris who organised the trip from this side and made sure everyone had an opportunity to see the sights of Brussels.”

Speaking after meeting with the group Mrs Dodds said: “I counted it as a great privilege to welcome Lisnagelvin Women’s Group to the European Parliament in Brussels this week. The European Union continues to have a significant impact on our lives, and it was great to sit around a table and discuss how such issues affect members of this group on a day to day basis. Indeed, as we enter into a referendum debate on the UK membership of the EU it is good to sit down and talk through the impact of EU membership.”

“I was able to update the group on my work in the European Parliament on a wide range of issues, from support for small businesses, standing up for our farmers, representing victims and freedom of religion to name but a few. Indeed, it was good to inform the group of the funding opportunities available through Europe. In Northern Ireland we have a wealth of Community Groups and Not-for-Profit Organisations, like Lisnagelvin, that form the backbone of our society. Yet raising money to carry out plans is without doubt the biggest challenge facing these organisations. As an MEP for Northern Ireland, I want to see more money coming into the Province, assisting local communities to move forward.”

“Since becoming an MEP in 2009, I launched a series of ‘Signpost to Funding Opportunities’ advice guides that continue to bring great success to many groups and it is my plan to continue to work closely with and assist more groups, like Lisnagelvin.”
