Island pupils take on paralympic challenges

CHILDREN at Mullaghdubh Primary School learned last week how people with disabilities compete at the highest level in sport.

The Islandmagee school is one of 100 primaries in Northern Ireland taking the 5-Star Disability Sports Challenge in the build-up to the 2012 Olympics in London.

Delivered by Disability Sports NI and funded by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure the project aims to increase children’s awareness and understanding of disability.

Disabled sports people raise awareness and give pupils an opportunity to take part in five challenges, each based on a paralympic sport.

Angela Hendra, chair of Disability Sports NI, said :”We are happy that Mullaghdubh Primary School have so enthusiastically come on board with the 5-Star Challenge project. We know the project will showcase disability sport in a positive way, challenge negative attitudes and inspire both disabled and non-disabled children to participate and excel in sport.”
