Latest: Police seek Volkswagen driver after Cookstown man killed in collision with red Mercedes

Officers investigating the death of a male pedestrian on the Lissan Road in Cookstown just before midnight on Monday are appealing for eye witnesses.

The local man, who is believed to have walked from the direction of Cookstown, was struck by a red Mercedes car at around 11.45pm.

Officers say they are particularly keen to the driver of a dark Volkwagen which is understood to have passed the scene just moments before.

Police are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time leading up to the collision and who may have seen a male pedestrian to contact them,” a spokesperson said.

“Officers are also keen to speak with the driver of a dark coloured car, possibly a Volkswagen, which is reported to have passed the scene of the collision shortly before it occurred.

Constable Nick Browne has appealed for anyone with any information to contact officers at the Collision Investigation Unit on 101.

Meanwhile UUP MLA Sandra Overend and UUP Councillor Trevor Wilson have expressed their sympathies to the family of the road victim.

“I was incredibly saddened to learn of the death of a man in Cookstown on Monday night,” said Mrs Overend.

“Each death on our roads is a tragedy, and this one is no different. This man’s life was cut short in tragic circumstances, and his loss will be felt by his family circle, as well as the wider Cookstown community.”

Mr Wilson added: “My thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in this tragic accident.”
