Lisburn Home Start urged to ‘Bag it and Bin it’

WHAT really lurks beneath our homes? The answer, in Lisburn, is everything from nappies, to cotton wool and baby wipes.

NI Water recently visited Lisburn Home Start Volunteers to tell them all about the Bag It & Bin It Campaign and how they can help tackle the ‘loo-vely’ problem of sewer blockages caused by flushing inappropriate items such as baby wipes, cotton wool and nappies down the toilet.

Jane Jackson, Environmental Education Manager explained: “NI Water constantly finds items such as nappies, wipes, and cotton wool washed into pumping stations and blocking sewers.

“There is a common misconception that it is ok to flush these items when in fact, sewerage systems are not designed to cope with them. Education is key to addressing this issue and for this reason we decided to link up with Home Start Volunteers to help us target a key customer audience – mums and carers.”

To help the system work properly, everyone needs to use it responsibly. Whilst NI Water has a responsibility for the sewerage system, everyone in Northern Ireland has to play a role in disposing of their waste appropriately.
