Making music and money for charity

The Primary 7 girls of Lislagan School have taken Shakespeare’s famous words ‘to heart’ and recently organised a hugely successful fundraising Valentine’s Disco in aid of the Children’s Heartbeat Trust, raising £575.

Not only did the pupils organise the disco themselves but they were the DJs for the event, too.

And this is not the only time the talented pupils have shared their musical knowledge.

For the Primary Seven students from Lislagan actually run their own school radio station.

School principal Wesley Edgar told the Times: “The radio station in Lislagan has actually been up and running for the last 14 or 15 years.

“The station is used to play music around the school during each break and lunchtime.

“The P7s take charge of the running of the station entirely. At the start of each year, I spend about a week explaining the practical details of how the equipment works and then they take it from there.

“We have a collection of CDs they can choose from but more and more the children are playing songs that they bring in on their phones.

“The station only broadcasts to the school itself, into the classrooms.

“As well as broadcasting music, the station has run a magazine type programme, running features on the football team, quizzes and even interviewing some of the children. It’s a great experience for the P7s as they look after everything from choosing the music to organising rotas.”
