A barrister representing the defendant said there had been a traumatic incident where a friend of the defendant had been brutally stabbed to death in 2012.

He added that the defendant had suffered post traumatic stress disorder as a result of what happened.

The barrister said McKinley, in the cell, felt a sense of isolation.

He added the defendant lost control of himself and would apologise profusely for his behaviour.
