Manchester United star backs culture bid

LONDONDERRY'S Manchester United player Darron Gibson has become the latest high profile figure to back the city's bid to become UK City of Culture in 2013.

The 22-year-old, who has figured large in this season's League Cup campaign for United believes that his home town has all the attributes necessary to achieve the accolade of City of Culture in three year's time.

"Derry would be a natural choice for the UK City of Culture in 2013. There are few cities anywhere that can boast such a fascinating history as Derry and that consistently produce such incredible talent across so many fields, be it in music, literature or in sports," he said.

Darron also said he believes that the world famous city means it would be the perfect choice as the UK's first ever City of Culture.

Darron said: "As well as being a hotbed for talent, Derry remains one of the friendliest cities in the world and it would only be fitting that it receives the honour of being named UK City of Culture in 2013."
