Dressed in his suit, wearing a mask, snorkel and flippers, Lisburn’s First Citizen braved the challenge, watched by numerous council staff and members of the public.

Mr Ewing said: “I was delighted to have the opportunity to take part in the ice bucket challenge in front of fellow elected members and council officers at the Island Civic Centre.

“A number of colleagues had nominated me in recent days and I embraced the challenge today in my snorkel, goggles and flippers.”

He continued: “The chill of the water and the ice cubes were a big shock to the system but it was entertaining for the spectators and ‘water throwers’ as the Island Civic Centre. The footage is on the Council’s facebook if any resident wishes to view it; and I hope donate to Marie Curie by texting an amount of money and ICEY73 to 70070.”

He added: “I nominate Jeffrey ‘I don’t get my hair wet’ Donaldson, Luke ‘Spray tan’ Poots and my brother Gavin ‘don’t spend any money’ Ewing.”
