MLA calls for committee enquiry into river pollution

South Antrim MLA Pam Cameron has called on the Assembly’s Environment Committee to consider holding an enquiry into the issue of river pollution.

Mrs Cameron raised the subject last week in response to a series of fish kills on the Ballymartin Water and Sixmilewater rivers.

“I’ve suggested the enquiry could look at how the department manages these incidents and how it communicates with the public/river users,” the DUP politician explained.

While there was no objection to Mrs Cameron’s suggestion, it’s unlikely an enquiry will take place before next year’s Assembly election.

“This is a matter of high priority for the Environment Committee, of which I am the deputy chair. We as a committee will be taking oral evidence on this subject in the near future, possibly October,” Mrs Cameron added.
