DUP Councillor James McCorkell is calling on community groups, ex-service organisations and schools in the Borough to take advantage of funding to assist them in researching, promoting and conserving the events of the Great War.

The Deputy Mayor was once again highlighting funding that is available from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which can be accessed to help groups, communities and organisations mark the Centenary of World War one by exploring, conserving and sharing the heritage of the First World War, from memorials, buildings and sites, to photographs, letters and literature. Grants are available from £3,000 - £10,000, £10,000 - £100,000 and £100,000 upwards.

The Deputy Mayor said: “As we approach this important centenary, people of all ages throughout the United Kingdom will be reflecting on the events of the First World War, the experiences of men and women here and overseas, and how the war has shaped the last 100 years. A generation of Limavady people played a unique role in World War One. That role has in recent years been meticulously and faithfully researched and publicized by local man Alistair Harper.” Councillor McCorkell praised Mr Harper for his work and said that he is to be highly commended for the valuable work he continues to do. He added: “It is vital that we as a community preserve the memory of the events of 1912-1918 and said this funding was a great way to assist the community to do so. The heritage of the First World War includes anything relating to the First World War that we value and want to pass on to future generations.
