Pensioner Rape: Man Remanded In Custody

A Court has been told that the man accused of raping a Ballymena pensioner is already the subject of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order.

Barry Johnston, 25, is accused of attacking the 74-year-old woman in Ballymena on Saturday.

He appeared at Monday's sitting of Coleraine Magistrate's Court.

The court ordered that his home address should not be made public.

In addition to the rape charge, Johnston is accused of a number of related offences including aggravated burglary and possession of cannabis.

The defendant is also accused of breaching the terms of an interim Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO).

A police officer told the court he believed he could connect Johnston to the rape charge.

The defendant, who wore a navy blue track-suit, stood in the dock flanked by prison officers. He did not speak during the brief hearing.

Johnston was remanded in custody to appear via video link at a sitting in Antrim of Ballymena Magistrate's Court on September 9.
