"He was really loved and was such a solid member of the team; he was the first person the children would see on their way into school each day," Mrs Miller added.

"Johnnie didn't just do his job, he did it with a smile; he loved working with the kids and was fiercely protective of them.

"He would have talked to the children about his job and every year taught the primary ones how to cross the road safely.

"Starting the new term without him is going to be hard."

A keen sports fan, Mr McAlister was also a familiar face at Carrick Rangers Football Club.

"A real character amongst the Amber Army, Johnnie will be missed by everyone at Taylors Avenue.

"Our thoughts and condolences go to Johnnie's family and friends at this sad time."

East Antrim MLA John Stewart, who also knew Mr McAlister through his role at Carrick Model, said: "Johnnie was a real gentleman and hugely popular with every single one of the boys and girls he helped across Belfast Road each day on their way to and from school.

"He always had a smile on his face and never missed the opportunity for a chat and a laugh.

"He will be sadly missed."
