Coronavirus: Former Ballyclare High pupil helps develop low-cost medical ventilator

Aaron Fleming is a fifth year Medic at Gonville and Caius Cambridge University and has been involved in the design and user interface at the Open Ventilator System Initiative.
Commenting on the pioneering work, a spokesperson for Ballyclare High said: “In March 2020 when the Covid pandemic began at a terrifying rate it was quickly recognised that a lack of ventilators would be a huge obstacle in the treatment of this disease with a particular lack of machines noted in less affluent countries.

Hide Ad“In response, a team at Cambridge University led by Gonville and Caius College, which included international engineers and scientists and Aaron set out to produce a low-cost medical ventilator that could be used to save lives.
“The result was the first clinical grade ventilator to be manufactured in Africa. Congratulations to all involved in this wonderful achievement.”
