Youth to learn aboutdemocracy

Mayor of Londonderry, Kevin Campbell said: “Local Democracy Week puts young people at the heart of local decision making process by allowing them to find out about the Council, the role it plays in the city and how they can get involved. It actively encourages young people to get involved in civic life and to make Councils more relevant to young people.”

Karen Henderson, Members Service Officer with Derry City Council added: “It’s a great way for everyone involved to exchange views, learn something about how local decision making works while providing a fresh perspective on local issues.”

Among the events scheduled for primary school children as part of Local Democracy Week is a guided tour of the Workhouse Museum and a quiz, an address from the Mayor, and the chance to take part in a debate with local councillors on the issue of ‘Television or Books, which is better.’

Secondary school pupils will be encouraged to take part in a political speed dating event and a youth question time on the theme of ‘Human Rights Make for more Inclusive Communities.’

Mayor Campbell concluded: “This is a fantastic event for everyone involved. I am really looking forward to meeting with children and young people from schools all over the Council area and hearing their views and opinions on a range not only for the participating schools and the young people involved, but for the elected members and Council officers.

“It’s a chance for us to hear what the young people of this city think about Council as we get ready for 2013 and being the City of Culture. It will be interesting to hear their views and to engage with them directly.”
