Portadown man gave wrong name to police

When police spoke to a 21-year-old man sitting in a car in the early hours of the morning he lied to them about who he was, Craigavon Magistrates Court heard last Wednesday.

Francis Duffy, Woodside Green, Portadown, admitted obstructing police on June 13 last year.

He also pleaded guilty to not displaying ‘L’ plates, driving unaccompanied, not having insurance and taking a car without the consent of the owner.

The court heard that at 3.20am at Bachelor’s Walk in Portadown police approached a parked car. The defendant was in the driver’s seat and a young female was in the passenger’s seat.Duffy said he did not have his licence with him and gave his name as Christopher Smith with a Derrymacash address.

The female owner of the car confirmed she had owned the vehicle for three years and had only one set of keys.

They were left hanging up in the kitchen and Duffy admitted taking them while she was upstairs sleeping. He only had a provisional licence.

The defendant said that he panicked and was sorry at what had happened.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said that given the defendant’s record and that he had ‘told lies right away’ he would need a pre-sentence report.

He adjourned sentencing until February 17.
