Pupils raise funds tohelp those in poverty

St Killian’s College Upper Sixth pupils presented charity cheques at the end of a year’s enthusiastic fundraising.

The students have been fund-raising throughout the year and chose two charities to receive a donation that combined both the educational and religious ethos of St Killian’s.

Special guests at the presentation were Sr Mary McAteer and Mrs Geraldine McIlwaine.

Sr Mary McAteer is an Assumption Sister who works in South Africa, providing education, food and accommodation to impoverished children in the townships there.

Mrs McIlwaine’s sister, Sr Patricia McLaughlin, is a Loreto nun who is Principal of Fe Y Allegua in the Jicamarca area of Lima, again an impoverished area of the city.

As well as providing education with the hope that the children can escape their impoverished backgrounds, the school also provides them with food and
shelter.

The presentations were made by head girl Marianne O’Toole and head boy Rónán McIlwaine.

Both Sr Mary and Mrs McIlwaine thanked Rónán, Marianne and the rest of the Upper Sixth for choosing to make the donations to these two charities that were doing so much to make a difference to those struggling to survive in extreme poverty.
